Objectives
The Memory Place project has the following objectives:
- To make Indigenous cultural and environmental knowledge, historical records and data available in an easy-to-access and integrated manner, which will reflect the Indigenous view of the world.
- To build on the existing collection of resources relating to Indigenous language and culture.
- To provide an appropriate and systematic way of conserving knowledge and materials for future generations.
- To encourage cross-cultural awareness, cultural sustainability, cultural pride and conservation of knowledge between generations.
- To promote literacy in Indigenous languages and English.
- To engage Indigenous people, young and old, in the active and ongoing conservation of their cultural heritage and language.
- To engage Indigenous people with technology and the benefits it provides to them for sharing cultural heritage and language, and conserving it for future generations.
- To promote Indigenous language and knowledge to non-Indigenous community members and the wider community, in negotiation with Traditional Owners.
- To train and employ local Indigenous people throughout the project in a number of different roles.
- To make historical cultural information and resources readily available to community members and organisations for educational and creative uses.
- To find innovative ways to make cultural knowledge available to the community.
- To ensure knowledge transfer happens in culturally appropriate and sustainable ways.
- To protect intellectual property and address copyright issues.
